Big Successes
Its not only business that is buoyant in Newry. The positive attitude that characterise out entrepreneurs and business leaders is also apparent throughout the community and inspires individuals in all walks of life. We have seen many success stories in recent years, and they all enhance our reputation as on of the friendliest and most successful small cities in the UK.

In the education sector our local schools continue to gain national recognition for the quality of opportunity that they offer our young people. While in the tourism sector, the canal court hotel in Newry was named Northern Ireland hotel of the year in 2003 for the second time in four years making it the only hotel to win this award twice.

In the world of sport, we’ve seen history being made by local winners. In September 2002, Armagh captured the all Ireland gaelic football title and in may 2003 , a team from Northern Ireland conquered Mount Everest with Newry-born Banjo Bannon on of the two team members to reach the summit.

The area’s profile has been further boosted internationally by a series of important sporting events. Warren point gold club hosted on of the most prestigious golf tournaments in Europe when the ladies European tour golf event – when the ladies European tour gold event was staged at the south down course in august 2003 and was beamed live to over 100 countries on sky TV. We were also a host town toi the Icelandic delegation for the special Olympics in 2003 and our historic canal will be the venue for another world class event the world club angling championships brings teams from all over the world to Newry for a week in June 2004.

But its not just sporting events that have been grabbing the headlines. Newry and mourn also boasts a calendar full of wonderful events that appeal to residents and visitors alike - and under line the diversity of culture that exists here . these include the St. Patrick’s Day Festival, the Fiddlers Green International Festival in Rostrevor, the Blues on the Bay in Warrenpoint, the Maidens of Mourne Festival in Warrenpoint, the Feile Camlough, and the Kilbroney 2000 All Ireland Vintage Car Rally.

Against the backdrop, we are seeing cross community co-operation also flourishing. For example, the sell-out piping Hot Concert organised by Altnaveigh House Cultural Society provided a real celebration of the area’s cultural in Newry organised by Altnaveigh House Cultural Society Provided a real celebration of the area’s cultural diversity and cross- community efforts have also now raised over £100,000 for the interdenominational church at Daisy Hill Hospital. However foremost among such examples have to be the free concert to celebrate the award of city status in June 2002 – when more than 40,000 people took to the streets to enjoy the biggest entertainment event in Newry’s history.
