| Big Opportunities |
|
Newry offers inward investors some big opportunities. We have development land, business premises and a large pool of skilled labour. But the city and its satellite communities in Newry and mourne can also offer residents great opportunities in terms of education employment and quality in terms of education, employment and quality of life. Exploiting all these opportunities to the full is the goal we have set the city.
The future of Newry will be built on the developments that tap into the existing strengths – our established regional status, our location on the Belfast – Dublin economic corridor and our dynamic and young population. Significantly, the Regional development strategy for Northern Ireland seeks to exploit the strategic Employment locations (SELs) to attract and accommodate major inward investment projects and local enterprise. Promoting the designation of Newry & Mournes in particular of the city of Newry itself as an SEL should be on of our first goals if we are to exploit all the opportunities that we envisage.
And , of course, thee opportunities exist in many areas – all we have to do is imagine them ! and this is what the public and private partners involved in the city bid have been doing over the past year. Some of their ideas you may be familiar with - others are still under review – but what we need are more people willing to imagine that future, more people willing to put forward ideas more people willing to think big.
Whether residents or potential inward investors, we invite you to imagine what the future of Newry could be like. For example what can we do to further improve educational opportunities for our young people? Can we work together to upgrade the Newry Institute to a university? Can we build links with other universities in the North, the South, or in the USA? Likewise, what should we do to boost tourism natural and historic resources right on our doorstep, we have terrific opportunities for sailing, walking, fishing, golf and so much more. So how can we make the most of these?
What infrastructure improvements would you like to see? Improved road links with Belfast and Dublin? A ferry link? A multipurpose stadium and convention centre? Go on think big. What about developments in the health sector? Or in our IT infrastructure? What should our priorities be? And in terms of business development which sectors offer us the best opportunities of securing major inward investments? Where should we market our city as an inward investment location? In Ireland? In England? In the USA? Should we aim to attract a government department to Newry?
Why not? Think big.
And finally, what should our priorities be in the terms of city centre improvements? Do we need more development land? More landscaping? Better signage? More car parking? Better traffic management? In short, we want you – whatever your interest in our community – to think about the future and how we can make the most of what we have.
