On Saturday 7th October between 12 and 4pm Big Telly’s Creative Shop (52 Hill St) becomes a Fun Palace – a place where the arts and science meet and mix, imagination oozes out of every corner. Call in and watch arts and craft demonstrations where artists from Newry’s own Craft design get creative with clay, natural materials and doors into the fairy world, also take part in experiments which reveal the alchemy of baking and discover if there is any common ground between modern pharmacy and cures and remedies from way back. Plus we’ll be exhibiting some of the Newry Trade Secrets boxes, interactive art pieces that celebrate the heritage of the Newry Reporter and the PSNI – it’ll be action packed!
Big Telly’s Creative Shop is a partnership between Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Newry BID team.
On 7th and 8th October 2017 over 100 FREE ‘Fun Palaces’ will pop up across the UK and globally, celebrating theatre director Joan Littlewood’s centenary and her vision shared with architect Cedric Price.
Check out what’s happening all over the world here http://funpalaces.co.uk/
In 1961, Joan and the architect Cedric Price came up with the idea of the ‘fun palace’. Their blueprint says:
“Choose what you want to do – or watch someone else doing it. Learn how to handle tools, paint, babies, machinery, or just listen to your favourite tune. Dance, talk or be lifted up to where you can see how other people make things work. Sit out over space with a drink and tune in to what’s happening elsewhere in the city. Try starting a riot or beginning a painting – or just lie back and stare at the sky.”
