How did we end up with a President Donald Trump? What does it say about American voters? Was he elected because of racism, xenophobia, religious beliefs or political conservativism?

We are pleased to announce a new public history series, to be held in Newry, on understanding the Trump Presidency in historical context. This short series of lectures and films will look to American history, particularly in the 20th and early 21st centuries in an attempt to identify the socio-economic, cultural and political dynamics that helped carry this New York entrepreneur and reality TV star to victory in November, 2016.

The course will explore this historical trajectory through four themes that dominated the national (and international) discussion around the 2016 election: the Conservative movement, immigration, race, and the populist tradition. Our goal is to emphasize the importance of intellectual curiosity and discovery, at a time when political voices in many parts of the world have questioned the value and validity of expertise.

Please see our attached poster for all information on times, locations, events, and how to book your seat, and find us on Facebook at “Public History Series: The Trump Presidency.”
