The ‘Spanish Lady’ was a worldwide flu epidemic that began in August 1918 during World
War 1 which ended up killing more people than the war itself! With a third of the world
affected an estimated 50 million people died as a result.
Speakers Dr Patricia Marsh and Dr Eamon Phoenix will speak on the pandemic.
Dr Marsh will talk about Newry and the Influenza pandemic ‘An enormous amount of
distress among the poor’ while Dr Phoenix will talk about an Ireland in Transition from
1918-1919, from the South Armagh by-election to the conscription crisis, Kaki election and
the first Dáil.
