Event Details

20 – 24 February the Museum will host‘The Warp and Weft of Herstory: The 20th Century History of the Women of Newry and Mourne’ at 2pm to 4pm. This short course will examine the fascinating local, regional and national stories of the women of the Newry and Mourne area in the twentieth century.

The course begins with a survey of the position of women in 1900 in Britain and Ireland, followed by examination of the 3rd Home Rule Crisis and the First World War. The course will then focus on how women dealt with the aftermath of war, suffrage and the ‘hungry thirties’. The penultimate lecture will address the contentious politics of mid-20th century Ireland and the 1950s consumer revolutions. We conclude by examining women’s experiences during ‘The Troubles’ and the development towards peace.

The lecture series complements the exhibition ‘Women in Newry and Mourne in the 20th Century’, which is on display until May 2017, explores the role and achievements of women with local connections in home life, business, education, sport, politics, church life, both world wars, fine art and the performing arts.
